First-time parents usually come into newborn photos with two big things in common - they’re hoping for beautiful images…and they’re nervous because this all seems new and stressful.
For the Epperson family, they may have been new parents, but they had a plan from the start. First we started with a beautiful outdoor maternity session. TeAirra (mama) was glowing, and you could tell they couldn’t wait to be parents!
Then TeAirra reached out closer to her due date and told me that their baby was almost here, and they wanted to work together again to capture newborn photos of their sweet little girl. We needed to move quickly, because babies grow a lot in the first few weeks. We wanted to capture baby girl with her toes as tiny as we could!
So, we scheduled a sit-down consultation for the following week, and they booked right away with zero hesitation. They knew they wanted their first days as parents documented in a way that felt meaningful, not stressful.
That consultation matters, especially for first-time parents. It gives you a place to ask the questions you don’t even know you have yet. Even though we did their maternity photos, doing a photoshoot around baby is a whole new experience! We talked through what they loved about their home, what kind of moments they wanted to capture, and how they wanted their images to feel when they looked back years from now.
We got so much accomplished in that meeting:
We chose colors that fit their space - Instead of guessing, we coordinated tones that would photograph well and match their home and decor.
We planned for real life - Nursing breaks, soothing breaks, and a slower pace were built into the expectation from the beginning.
Most importantly, we established that they didn’t have to manage everything alone! My job was to keep the photo session running smoothly and support them, so they could focus on their baby.
Not every newborn is sleepy the whole way through their photoshoot, and that’s normal. Their sweet baby girl needed a little extra help settling, so we slowed down and let the baby lead the photoshoot. That meant more breaks, more rocking, more feeding, and more gentle pauses in between.
No pressure to “push through.” No clock-watching.
Just a calm, baby-led pace that protects the experience and still delivers the images you came for.
When you give a newborn the time they need, you get the moments that matter most:
The way they relax on your chest after a feeding
The tiny stretches and curled fingers
The quiet eye contact that only happens when everything slows down
And that’s exactly what happened with the Epperson family.
One of the biggest things I hear from moms after their session is, “Thank you for making that feel easy.”
You never have to thank me, because you shouldn’t have to host, perform, or power through postpartum feelings to get beautiful newborn photos. Your newborn photoshoot should feel fun and stress-free. During TeAirra’s session, I supported her with nursing breaks, helped with holding baby when she and dad needed a hand, and kept everything moving in a way that felt gentle and steady.
If you’re a first-time parent and you want newborn photos that feel calm, guided, and true to your life right now, I’d love to help you document this season. Together, we’ll make this an experience you’ll cherish as much as the photos themselves.
As a mama of 3 myself, I know these are more than just pictures to you. These are the moments you want to freeze so you can remember them always.
