If you’re like me, it feels impossible that it’s already time to think about fall. And yet here we are! My fall bookings are open and I’m beginning to get excited about those beautiful golden fall family portraits.
Ever wondered what’s behind those perfect shots? Let me take you behind the lens in a fall family photoshoot!
Every successful photoshoot begins long before the camera even starts clicking. The first step is working with your family to select the perfect location. Obviously I love a gorgeous park with lush foliage, but you’d be surprised at the shots we can get in unlikely places! A little field right off the road or the yard space next to your driveway can make for lovely pictures. Together, we will choose the right place for you.
Next comes the wardrobe planning. Fall fashion is all about cozy layers, scarves, boots, and those earthy tones that complement the season—think burgundy, mustard yellow, deep green, and rich browns. I always advise families to coordinate their outfits rather than match exactly. The goal is for everyone to feel comfortable while still looking cohesive in the photos. Can’t find anything? Don’t worry - my client closet is well-stocked!
When you arrive at your shoot, there’s usually an immediate sense of excitement in the air. The crisp fall breeze and warm sunlight set the perfect tone. Before we even start shooting, I like to take a moment to chat with your family, especially the kids, so they feel comfortable and know what to expect.
I always check in with parents to make sure everyone is feeling good and ready for the shoot. Kids especially might need a snack or a little time to adjust, so I make sure there’s no rush. We’re aiming for genuine smiles and relaxed moments, not stiff poses.
The heart of any great family shoot is the candid moments. I make it a point to keep things lighthearted and fun, especially with little ones. We play games, like “let’s all run and jump into the leaves!” or “who can make the silliest face?” This brings out genuine laughter and joy, and those are the photos I treasure the most.
The main thing to know is that you get to play and spend some time with your family. I will capture the special shots you’ll love.
What kind of fall family portraits would you like to hang on your wall?
