Starting New Family Traditions

Christmas is a time for traditions. Some families have been passing them down for generations, each new year adding little twists and new color. Maybe that's you and you are already preparing for this year's celebrations. For others, traditions are something they want but aren't sure how to implement or even where to start. If that sounds like you, read on for some ideas on new traditions that will bring you warmth and joy for years to come.

Christmas Cookies

This one is almost a no-brainer, and has options for every kind of family. You can pick up pre-made cookie dough at the grocery store, or you can make your own from scratch. Pick up some cookie cutters, icing, and sprinkles, and you're off to the races with a messy but fun activity for the whole family. As a bonus, you could even make enough to pass out around the neighborhood!

Christmas Tree Traditions

If you are a live tree family, heading to the Christmas tree farm and picking out the perfect one is a great tradition for families. And if you're committed to the artificial tree, there is still room for lots of fun! After you've set up your tree, real or not, have your family gather around and decorate. Turn on Christmas music, make cinnamon rolls, and fill your home with Christmas cheer.

Christmas Eve Celebrations

What does your Christmas Eve look like? Maybe you like to attend a candle lighting service. Or, for the more outgoing, perhaps you'd like to Christmas carol around your neighborhood. For a more intimate, family-time-focused evening, maybe you and your family want to gather around the fireplace and read the Christmas story or watch a beloved movie together. Whatever your activity, Christmas Eve can become a wonderful tradition for your family.

The Big Day

It's finally Christmas, and now is your moment to start some fun traditions! Does your family get up early and tear through your gifts in a joyous frenzy? Or maybe you like to sleep in eat a delicious breakfast, and open gifts one-by-one. What about the big meal of the day? Cooking it together can be such a fun family activity, with the bonus that your kids get some learning time in the kitchen. Don't miss out on these sweet moments together!

It can feel awkward at first to introduce traditions, but in the long-run it's completely worth it! Intentionally planning activities to mark special moments act as milestones for your family. Make sure you take lots of pictures so you can look back over the years!
