One of the joys of being a photographer is watching families grow. Scrunchy sleepy newborns turn into curious toddlers full of spontaneity. While these little firecrackers can seem impossible to photograph, they are actually a canvas of heartwarming and hilarious emotions.

Over the years, I’ve learned the “dos and don’ts” of capturing the toddler magic. Keep reading for some of my toddler photography secrets!

Location

DO consider where your toddler thrives. Do they do best in the comfort of your home? On a playground? Outside at a park? Plan with your photographer to pick a place your toddler can be themselves.

DON’T miss these great north Huntsville spots if your family is ready for a little more adventure!

Timing

DO plan around your toddler’s schedule. When is their happiest time of day? When are they most open to interaction and play? Set them up for success by scheduling around them.

DON’T give up if they have a meltdown or are very shy at first. Give them some time to recover and try again. As a mother myself, I’ve seen everything and am ready to work with your toddler to bring out their best.

Candid Moments

DO let them play and be themselves! Silly toddler antics and quiet focused play alike make for lovely pictures. Consider playing with bubbles, reading a story, or having a little dance party.

DON’T worry that your child is not posing or interacting the way you imagined. Some days your toddler may play and laugh with the photographer. Other days, they may want to snuggle into your chest and peek out when they feel brave. Both are expressions of who your toddler is - and both are beautiful.

Choosing a Photographer

DO look for a portfolio that has the emotive, candid moments of toddlers and small children. This type of work indicates a patient and flexible photographer. I also make sure to have a conversation with potential clients about their child’s specific personality and needs.

DON’T be afraid to ask questions and voice your worries. Knowing your hopes and anxieties beforehand helps me put you at ease!
